Add basic installation (where available)

Backyard Pods SydneyWe do not install pod kits directly, however, in most locations there are independent pod installers and licensed builders available to help with your pod installation and any custom requirements. At the most basic level, when people want to do the interior finishing and any outside additions by themselves, installation (if available in your area) usually includes:

  • Preparation of foundations (if using foundation piers) providing the site is level and there are no obstructions such as tree roots, rock, paving, piping, etc
  • On-site assembly of the basic pod kit as per the materials specified in your chosen kit, providing the materials have been delivered and/or transferred to the point of assembly
  • Installation of basic extras:
      • 1x standard access door + up to 2x standard/double-glazed windows - purchased separately or provided by you, OR
      • 1x standard/double-glazed sliding door + 1x standard/double-glazed windows (+ flyscreens if applicable) - purchased separately or provided by you

You can negotiate with your installer for just basic installation as above, or more advanced pod finishing and customisation (read more below).

If we are unable to assist by introducing you to an installer in your area, you can probably find a local tradesperson to install your pod according to the instructions provided. If you're handy with tools, you could probably put it together yourself with a little help from your friends. You can purchase extras (door, windows) through local building suppliers or recyclers.

Installers can help you with all kinds of pod-based customisations - even joining two large pods together to make a whole house! Construction with pod kits is often half the cost of conventional construction materials and methods. Talk to us if you've got something unique or different in mind.

Check first if approval or certification is needed

While many backyard pods are successfully completed without any need for approval, regulations vary widely from State-to-State and region-to-region. The NSW regulations for backyard pods and granny flats are straightforward, providing that certain basic conditions are met. Whereas in NSW an experienced shed erector could install your pod, in VIC it's more likely you would need to have your pod kit installed by a licensed builder, or an owner/builder permit. It's your responsibility to ensure that whatever you're doing in your backyard is compliant with the State/local regulations specific to your site and intended purposes. If you're not sure about backyard building regulations in your State or local area, look online or check with your local council.

Suitable for certification as a granny flat

When erected according to the instructions, backyard pods are suitable for certification as a habitable dwelling (eg: granny flat, self-contained cabin, etc) where applicable.
